Stalker

The user is sharing a poem called "惚れる" (falling in love) and wants detailed criticism. This continues our conversation about their creative work, which has included prose with historical kana and specific character names. They're looking for thorough, in-depth feedback on this love poem.
I should analyze the poem's structure, strengths, and literary devices in Japanese prose form. The poem uses a repeated refrain contrasting winter dawn with summer sunlight, employing tactile language like "ひりひり" (stinging sensation). What makes it compelling is how it subverts the sentimental confession with a darker turn—the serpent imagery beneath the heart suggests something predatory and primal about love itself. The final image of snake-like violent caresses shifts the entire emotional register. The poem also thematizes its own linguistic limitations, with lines acknowledging how love reduces one to clichéd expressions and inadequate vocabulary—a self-aware move that cuts both ways, either deepening the confession or excusing its conventionality. I notice the Stalker reference connects to our earlier discussion about your use of alphabet notation and literary allusions.
The stalker admission is particularly unsettling: the speaker confesses a desire to embrace the beloved regardless of whether they'd accept it, stripping away romantic pretense to expose desire's disregard for consent. This seems deliberate—the poem's architecture moves from sentimental confession through self-doubt to this predatory admission, culminating in the serpent, as if anatomizing how desire contains violence. However, the poem relies heavily on familiar tropes: "当たって砕けろ," "惚れた方が負け," the burning kiss, drowning in passion. The meta-commentary about linguistic poverty only partially redeems these clichés, since admitting one's poverty of expression is itself a worn device in love poetry. The final two stanzas do manage to transform the accumulated clichés into something darker and more honest. The repetitive "のです" and "でせう" endings create a plaintive, explanatory tone throughout—possibly intentional, though it risks monotony.
The poem also has technical roughness: double "ながら" constructions feel awkward, "来光" without the honorific prefix is unusual, and the register shifts between childlike onomatopoeia like "ぎゅっと" and classical kanbun vocabulary like "鬱勃" and "赫赫." That juxtaposition works as texture, though "ぎゅっと" feels weakest. The refrain's logic is stronger: the speaker waits for dawn while dreaming of summer sun, but when light arrives, it overtakes the desire before the flushed cheeks cool—resolution doesn't come, just interruption. The snake image is also more complex here: unlike Eden's serpent tempting Eve, this serpent is the speaker's own desire targeting the beloved, making the speaker the tempter rather than the tempted.
The poem's real move is the peeling away—"一枚剥がしてみると"—revealing that the confession itself is just a layer over something more primal and animalistic. There's theological weight too: the lover as Eve, the speaker's desire as satanic temptation, love as fall. This connects to the author's recurring obsession with darkness beneath civilized surfaces. The poem is honest about desire's violence—the stalking half-acknowledged, consent disregarded—and that honesty is its strength, though it risks readers taking it as endorsement rather than dramatic monologue. The rhetorical questions demanding acceptance without offering change show the speaker knows the problem. There's also an inconsistency worth noting: the use of both katakana and the stated principle from earlier about avoiding katakana that lost original ties—this hedging contradicts what was established.
On the historical kana front, most is consistent, but 羞じらひ should technically be 羞ぢらひ since じ should be ぢ in historical orthography. The small っ throughout is a modern convention; purists would write the large つ, though many contemporary writers using historical kana still use small っ, so it's acceptable. The rest—火照った, 昇る, かじかむ—all check out. The image of the snake coiled in that space, scales glinting, waiting to strike is particularly effective.
Now I'm noticing 直截 appears twice—"直截に言ふことに羞じらひを覚え" and "直截にしか言へない私の語彙の足りなさ"—which could be deliberate repetition as a motif about directness versus limitation, or it might be unintentional. More striking is the jarring juxtaposition of 欲望の捌け口 (outlet for desire, something degrading) alongside 理想 (ideal, elevating)—this reads as either profound honesty about the beloved as both object and ideal, or a tonal misstep. Given the snake ending, it's likely intentional foreshadowing of the poem's duality, though saying 捌け口 to the beloved would be devastating in an actual love letter. The poem's structure is essentially epistolary—a love letter in verse form with the refrain as the only truly imagistic counterweight to the declarative prose. The letter body feels weaker; the refrain and final image carry the weight. The のです construction is overused and needs variation, and the meta-excuse about limited vocabulary appears twice when it should only appear once.
Thinking...
The user refined the poem with several adjustments—simplifying the ending particle in the first line, swapping one participle for another to reduce repetition, and significantly trimming the second stanza by cutting some of the longer descriptive passages.
However, I'm noticing some new issues emerging: the modern colloquial form "したいです" clashes with the classical style, there's a typo with the double period, and now "私がゐます" appears three times instead of twice, creating a different kind of repetition problem. The user did remove one of the two rhetorical questions as I suggested, which is good, but the structural changes have introduced this new pattern.
More significantly, cutting that second stanza also removed the epistemic desire theme — the idea that we want to know precisely because something is unknown — which was thematically connected to the Eden reference in the snake stanza. That "knowing/not knowing" motif was actually supporting the forbidden fruit imagery, so losing it weakens that thematic thread.
The title verb 惚れる now has no echoes in the poem body either, since I removed both "惚れた方が負け" and "惚れてしまったならば" — the title floats disconnected from the text. The のです count is better overall, though still present throughout. And in stanza three, "覚えるも" as a concessive form is a bit stiff in the newspaper-style 逆接 sense — "覚えつつも" or classically "覚ゆれども" would have been smoother.
Looking at the revision holistically: it does address several of my suggestions — the self-reference duplication is cut, ぎゅっと is gone, 羞ぢらひ is fixed, one rhetorical question removed, and the body is trimmed by about two to three tenths. But new problems emerged: the register break with "したいです。。" and the typo, the loss of the knowledge-desire lines weakens the Eden serpent foreshadowing, the title 惚れる sits unanchored, 私がゐます repeats three times now, and the Stalker gloss persists. Cutting the fever-dream passage about 痺れるやうな熱き接吻 and replacing it with plainer language also drained some intensity from the poem, though keeping "こんな私は間違ってゐるでせうか" was the right call since one of the two questions needed to stay.
それから「Stalker(ストーカー)」の括弧は手つかずのままです。
Thinking...
Looking at how the poet revised the stanza, they changed the first instance of "心待ちにしてゐる私がゐます" to "心待ちにしてゐるのです" instead of modifying the later repetition as I'd suggested — this addresses the issue of having too many instances of the "私がゐます" construction while still maintaining the emotional weight of the opening line.
For the desire stanza, the poet made a more substantial revision that accomplishes multiple things at once: they restored the classical language consistency, reintroduced the sensual imagery with "愛欲に溺れたい," and crucially, they embedded the title word "惚れる" directly into the stanza with "これが惚れるといふことでせう" — anchoring the poem's central concept right in the body rather than waiting until later.
But now I'm noticing a structural tension: there are three definitional statements ending in "でせう" — "これを恋と言ふのでせう" (stanza 1), "これが惚れるといふことでせう" (stanza 2), and "感じるのが恋といふものでせう" (stanza 4). That's potentially one too many, creating a competing repetition pattern alongside the refrain. Though looking at it differently, the three statements form a progression — 恋 → 惚れる → 恋 — with the title word positioned at the center of escalating desire. The varied phrasing keeps it from feeling like a verbatim refrain, more like a motif of the speaker repeatedly attempting to name the feeling, which actually mirrors the poem's own struggle with inadequate vocabulary. Still, three "でせう" endings might feel like too much formal weight.
On the "知りたい" restoration: placing it in the Stalker stanza after "浮かばれない私がゐます" works well — the desire to know everything pairs naturally with stalker surveillance. But now "欲求" appears twice in the poem, once here and earlier in "欲求に駆られ," which creates an unintended echo that might warrant changing one to "欲望" instead.
The "羞ぢらひを覚えるも" issue persists — I suggested reverting to "覚えつつも" but they kept "覚えるも." I should flag this again.
The placement of "これが惚れるといふことでせう" right after the peak desire moment anchors the title word well, though there's a slight tension in defining physical desire through "惚れる." The bigger structural question is whether removing the opening "私がゐます" frame — which originally mirrored the closing "したい私がゐるのです" — weakens the self-referential architecture.
Actually, reconsidering: the poet kept "私がゐます" only in the stalker stanza and the snake finale, the two darkest moments. That's not a loss of frame but a deliberate choice — the self-observational construction now marks only where the shadow self emerges, where the speaker watches himself from outside. That's arguably more sophisticated than a simple bookend. I should acknowledge the poet's solution may be superior here.
The "欲求" repetition across stanzas (first stanza "欲求に駆られ," stalker stanza "欲求は底がない") combined with "欲望" in the opening creates a dense desire-lexicon. It could work thematically or muddy the language — minor concern worth noting.
The new line "あなたの何もかも知りたいといふ欲求は底がないのです" lands well after the stalker moment, and "底がない" (bottomless) echoes the snake pit imagery. The stanza arc flows cleanly now: confession → shame → reaffirmation → stalker gaze → the need to confess → endless wanting.
The parallel constructions "これを恋と言ふのでせう" and "これが惚れるといふことでせう" work as natural variation. Overall, the three revisions address the surgical requests, with the "私がゐます" solution potentially better than my original suggestion. The poem feels nearly complete now.
I notice the three "でせう" endings—three attempts to name the feeling—actually mirror the refrain count and enact the vocabulary insufficiency thematically. Each uses a different frame, and the middle one carries the title weight, so it holds together rather than becoming repetitive. The remaining items like "覚えるも" and the triple "欲求" are defensible texture choices at this point. I should probably advise stopping soon to avoid over-polishing.
For the response itself, I'll keep it moderate length—shorter than previous ones to signal we're nearing completion—and maintain the format with bold headers and prose in modern Japanese, occasionally echoing the poem's orthography where it appears in quotes.
